Brilliant Seasonal Craft Supply Bins to Better Your Craft!!!

August 22, 2024 by laurenloves.org 8 Comments

Let me tell you about one of my favorite items for making crafting sessions so much better. Brilliant Seasonal Craft Supply Bins!

Seasonal craft supply bin full of fall crafting items.

My supplies were hard to corral. Too much to store in one place and put away easily.( I get my supplies used sometimes. My stash size ebbs and flows. I’d finally find what I needed and then I’d misplace my previous item in the sifting. #crafter problems lol. Where to start? Swamped and tempted to walk away. I felt suddenly drained from overwhelm and I only had a few minutes to craft anyway. Those few minutes add up though and was hindering my crafting ability. Significantly, I’m not alone. This is a common problem for crafters. “How do you store and organize a lot of craft supplies and art supplies in a small space?” Should I get a craft cabinet, Ikea storage solution, I needed something cheap and affordable that I could DIY for instance. And I needed to maximize my small space. I looked everywhere…

My mom had an idea…

One day I was problem-solving with my mom about my current predicament. At this point I had already let go of some items I no longer used. So I knew what I had left. As we were discussing it, she asked me “Why not store your supplies seasonally in bins?” “Well for one, I don’t think I have enough to store seasonally.”, was my response. I decided to double check straightaway to be sure though. That’s where the Seasonal Craft Supply Storage Bin concept was born.

Looking through my craft supplies, she was right. This idea of seasonal craft supply bins had potential.

Originally I didn’t think I had enough “seasonal supplies” to make a difference. But as I began to sort, I came across past “fall projects” I had yet to complete. And I did want to finish them. Those projects went into the fall bin with autumnal washi, themed stamps, patterned paper, journaling cards, devotionals, and any related goodies. A couple home decor items too, that I use to decorate my desk seasonally. While sorting, I puzzled out what I wanted and needed, to better my craft experience.

Here was my list of requirements:

Seasonal craft supply bins work wonderfully. It’s portable and allows me to grab a certain season and go work in another room. Or bring to a craft retreat, friends house, vacation etc. Here are other needs it answered:

  1. I didn’t want to be unable to access a good chunk of my items for most of the year. What if I wanted to implement that specific item at a moments notice?
  2. Furthermore, I wanted to easily reach a “different season’s items” quickly. Without it being in a closet buried somewhere. Not wanting to lose my “flow”, I preferred to be able to reach items from my desk.
  3. What if I wasn’t ready to tell a current “season” goodbye yet? Maybe I didn’t have enough time to craft this season or hadn’t finished my current art project yet? Sometimes I’m not ready to let go of one season, but at the same time I want to embrace the next season. #Lifeiscomplicated. 🙂
  4. I don’t have a ton of storage space and share a studio with a second person. Furthermore I preferred closed storage and something out of sight.
  5. I wanted less items to work with at one time to prevent overwhelm.

Here is my solution: Implement crafting seasonally with supply bins?

I purchased these ezy Storage bins for currently $11 from Target. They are 32L/ 33.8 Qt. The lids latch and they’re quite sturdy and waterproof. They have other sizes too. I purchased 4 bins with the idea that 1 “season” would always live on my desk while the other 3 “seasons would each have their own bin. And I designated an extra bin for excess surplus cardstock, duplicate replacement stamp inks, lesser used items etc. These four bins in stacks of two, fit perfectly under my desk which is actually a repurposed table. (More space to craft, less weight.) They were easy to pull out if I needed something, but low profile. Add in a few file folder organizers for easily keeping different items separate and you are set. These have become a game-changer and total hack for my craft space.

Brilliant seasonal craft supply storage perks:

  1. I used Dana K White’s method of “Where would I look for an item first?” It relies on your instinct / gut reaction, vs having to deal with decision fatigue. Check out her amazing book here. Game-changer.
  2. I can reach other “seasonal bins” instantly. Not “done” with “summer”? Christmas project in July? Accessible. Everything is together. I will put a previous season’s straggler items in a spot. Next time I pull bins out to switch seasons, I slip them in too.
  3. Less to sort. Everything fits my current mood and vibe/season.
  4. Uncompleted fall project? I’ll complete it this next fall. (And I have.) It takes pressure off “getting it all done” this season. My dilemma of what to work on next season is solved too. Dread for working on it in the future season tells me to declutter it. Uncertainty, I’ll wait and decide next season. It’s out of my way currently. This helps when you have too many projects at once. #fomo lol.
  5. I applied Dana K White’s container concept. 1 bin per season, plus the current season I’m working on, (kept on my desk and in my filing cabinet). Too many “projects”? I keep what fits, favorites first. After using fall washi tape up, I’ll freely buy more. Here’s a video of what I keep in my “fall bin” here.
  6. I put a few seasonal decorations in each bin too. This way I can seasonally decorate my desk/ craft area at the same time.
  7. I hope to combine bins and have a spring/summer bin and a winter/fall bin of supplies eventually so it takes up less space, but currently I had a surplus to begin with, so this is helping me use my stash.

Conclusions:

  • Correspondingly, this seasonal craft supply bin idea also works equally well with books and magazines, dishes, sewing supplies, seasonal decor, clothing and jewelry and more.
  • Conclusion, I love this brilliant system. It elevated my craft experience in many ways and has made me a better crafter.
